Medium Voltage Indoor Current Transformers (3.6kV to 69kV)

A medium voltage indoor current transformer (CT) steps down primary current to a standardised secondary value, typically 1A or 5A, so that protection relays and energy meters can measure and respond to it safely. It is a core component of indoor switchgear in medium voltage distribution networks.

Straton's Medium Voltage Current Transformers use resin cast construction, in which the winding assembly is encapsulated in epoxy resin for high dielectric strength and stable insulation in indoor conditions. They are designed and tested to IEC 61869-1 & 2 / IS 16227 and fit directly into switchgear panels in utility substations and industrial installations.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Indoor current transformers are installed inside switchgear panels in utility substations, industrial power systems, EPC infrastructure projects, and solar and wind farm substations. They connect to protection relays and energy meters at 11kV and 33kV, supplying the measured current needed for metering, fault detection, and relay protection within electrical distribution networks.
Resin cast indoor CTs use epoxy resin to encapsulate the winding assembly. This provides high dielectric strength, thermal stability, and moisture resistance, supporting reliable operation inside indoor switchgear. The cast construction also keeps the unit compact, and partial discharge is controlled and verified through routine and type testing before the CT is dispatched.
Straton's MV current transformers are designed and tested to IEC 61869-1 & 2 / IS 16227. IEC 61869-1 covers general requirements for instrument transformers, while Part 2 adds requirements specific to current transformers for metering and protection. Type tests are certified by CPRI, and routine tests, including partial discharge measurement, are carried out in-house.
MV indoor current transformers are available in 0.2S and 0.5S classes for metering, 5P10 and 5P20 classes for protection, and PS class for special protection needs. Metering classes give high accuracy at normal load currents, while protection classes maintain accuracy during fault conditions. The class and rated burden are selected to suit the connected meter or relay.
Resin cast current transformers offer compact design, moisture resistance, low maintenance, and strong insulation performance. The encapsulated winding assembly provides stable dielectric strength in indoor conditions, which makes these units suitable for fitting directly into switchgear panels where space is limited. This supports reliable operation and long, dependable service in indoor switchgear environments.
